The Use of Critical Thinking Method to Improve the Students’ Reading Comprehension at the Eight Grade of SMP Negeri 1 Ajangale

The aims of this research were to investigate the effectiveness of using critical thinking method to improve the students reading comprehension and to know the students achievement by using this method. The sample of this research were the students at the eighth grade (VIII A) of SMPN 1 Ajangale. They were selected by cluster sampling that consist of 20 students to study English by using critical thinking method as a treatment.
Regarding the data analysis, this research were used pre-test and post-test to analyzes the effectiveness of using the critical thinking method to improve the students’ reading comprehension and the questionnaire were use to identify students’ interest in studying English by applying the critical thinking method. The result of this research finally showed that the students’ reading comprehension score in pre-test were 62,95 and 72,75 for their post-test. The data was analyzed by using t-test and the result showed that t-test value was 8,857 was greater than the t-table value 1,729. It means that there was significant difference of students reading comprehension before and after treatment of critical thinking method. In questionnaire out of 20 students 65% chose that this method enlarge the students’ interest in learning English. So, it can be concluded the critical thinking method were effective to improve reading comprehension for the students
A. Conclusion. The use of critical thinking method was improve the students’ reading compherension. It was proven by the data of students’ score both in pre test and post test. The students’ mean score in post test (72,75) was higher than the mean
score of pre test (62,95). After using the critical thinking as treatment, the students’ reading comprehension got improvement. So, it can be concluded that the using critical thinking method can improve students’ reading comprehension at
the eighth grade of SMPN 1 Ajangale.
B. Suggestion.
In fact, using critical thinking method in teaching reading comprehension
has been proven being more effective. So, the researcher would like to give some
suggestions as follows :
1. The English teacher should be creative in managing the method that should be
integrated into classroom.
2. The English teacher should take more consideration in mastering reading
comprehension.
3. The English teacher should apply critical thinking in teaching reading
comprehension.
4. The English teacher should take more time in teaching reading
comprehension.
