The effectiveness of Watching Video Io Teaching American Accent Io Promoting Student's Speaking Ability At The Sixth Semester of English Department In IAIN Bone

The purpose of this research was to investigate the effectiveness of watching video in teaching American accent materials in promoting students’ speaking ability and to know the students’ motivation by using this method. The sample of this research was the students of sixth semester in academic year 2018 at IAIN Bone. They were selected by cluster sampling that consists of 15 students to study English by using audiovisual method as a treatment. This research is a quantitative research, which used experimental study as a research design. Most of students could speak English but they could not speak with good accent. The main problem are they still forgot some vocabularies and they are still influenced by their vernacular dialect that made them could not speak naturally.
Regarding the data analysis, this research used test and questionnaire as instrument. Test was used to analyze the effectiveness of watching video in teaching American accent materials in promoting students’ speaking ability and the questionnaire was used to identify students’ motivation in learning English by using the audiovisual method. Regarding T-test value found that there was no significant difference between pre-test and post-test in students’ speaking ability. The mean score in pre-test and post-test increased after learning English by watching video and out of the 15 students, 73,33% chose that this method enlarge the students’ motivation in learning English
A. Conclusion
At the end of the research, the post-test was given to measure the influence of using the method of watching video in teaching American accent materials in promoting students’ speaking ability. The mean score of pre-test is 79,07 and the mean score of post-test is 84,87. It showed that the mean score students’ of pre-test was higher that the mean score students’ of post-test.
Based on the result of questionnaire, it conclude that the students’ motivation enlarge during using this method. Out of the 15 students, 73,33% chose this method could enlarge their motivation in learning English by watching video in teaching American accent materials in promoting students’ speaking ability.
B. Suggestion
In view of the fact that the method of watching video has been proved to be effective in teaching American accent materials in promoting students’ speaking ability, the reseacher would like to give suggestions as follows:
1. For the teacher
Considering this method, the researcher suggests the English teacher to apply this method. This method is one of method that could help in
teaching speaking, listening, phonetic phonology, or cross culture understanding. This method gave the students much variant subject video that can make the students interest.
2. For the students
Considering this method, the researcher suggests the students to learn English by using this method. It can be easier to learning English acquisition or learning English comprehension.
3. For the other researcher
It is suggested that other researcher may use the research results as information or a reference to conduct the research with the similar topic in the same design about the effectiveness of watching video with different subject.
