Developing Students Speaking Achievement Using Mingling Activity to the Students of SMPN 5 Watampone

This thesis presents research about developing students speaking achievement by using mingling activity at the SMPN 5 Watampone. Mingling activity is one of strategy which can help the students to solve their difficulties in their speaking. The problem statement of this thesis is: Does the students speaking achievement develop using mingling activity at the SMPN 5 Watampone.
The researcher uses quantitative method with pre-experimental design. The researcher applies cluster sampling by choosing the class IX of SMPN 5 Watampone year 2018/2019. It consists of six classes with the total 120 students. This research employs a test based on the problem statement investigated, it is speaking test, speaking test consists of pre test was given to the students to know the students’ speaking ability before applying mingling activity and post test is given to the students to know the students’ speaking ability after
applying mingling activity, while the data obtains through tests are analyzed with mean score and the formula of test. After several meetings, this research finds out the use of developing students speaking achievement by using mingling activity. The result of this research shown: (1) the mean score obtained by students through pre test is (49,58) and post test is (67,50). (2) the t-test value is higher than the t-table (13,339>2,690). It means that
there is a significant difference between the result of the students pre test and post test.
A. Conclusion
Based on the findings and discussions above, the researcher comes to make conclusions. They were as follows:
Students’ ability was improved students speaking ability by using mingling activity of the students of
SMPN 5 Watampone. It was proved by the result of students’ improvement in pre-test and post-test. The students’ ability was proved based on their score in post test better than pre test which had different significant of their score. It could be seen clearly the score of pre-test. In pre-test the total score of pronunciation that in pre test got 300 and post test got 380, grammatical that in pre test got 335 and post test got 395, Vocabulary that in pre test got 275 and post test got 430, Fluency that in pre test got 280 and post test got 415.
The result of pre test in experimental research, there are 24 students. There are 2 students get very poor score, and 21 students get poor score, and 1 student get fair score, and no one student get good and excellent score. So, in the pre-test, most of the students still got low score.
The score has increased in the post-test after giving treatment applying mingling activity in
teaching speaking. Most of students get high score, it means that 6 students get good score and
students get fair score, and no one students get poor, and very poor score, so all of students get score significantly increased and students got high score more than low score.
It could be seen clearly The mean score of students’ pretest in experimental research was 49,58
which was categorized as fair classification. Mean while standard deviation of the students was 6,903. While, The mean score of the experimental in posttest was 67,50 which was classified as good. meanwhile standard deviation was 5,316.
B. Suggestions
The researcher gives suggestions to all readers and especially for teachers, lecturers or instructors and students that:
1. For the improvement of the teaching English, the researcher suggests to the English teacher especially
speaking should give the good method in teaching English based on the students’ motivation. Using
mingling activity can develop students’ speaking achievement.
2. The students can improve their speaking ability pass practice every moment.
