Improving Students’ Ability in Learning Simple Past Tense Through Songs (An Experimental Research at the Second Grade of SMAN 2 Cenrana)

This script aims at finding out Improving Students’ Ability in Learning Simple Past
Tense Through Song at The Second Grade Students of SMAN 2 Cenrana. The problem
statement of this thesis is: Can Songs Improve the students’ ability in learning simple past tense?
This research employed pre-experimental method with pre-test and post-test design.
There were two variables, they were independent variable (song) and dependent variable
(improving students’ in learning simple past tense).
After several meetings, the researcher found out the improving student’s ability in
learning simple past tense through Song was significantly increase the students achievement. The
result of this research shows : (1) the mean score obtained by the students through pre-test was
45 and post-test was 68,75 (2) the t-test value was higher than the t-table (5,434>2,052). It
means that there was a significant difference between the result of the students’ pre-test and posttest.
Therefore, null hypothesis (H0) is rejected and alternative hypothesis (H1) is accepted.
Result of the research shows that the students improve their grammar especially in simple past
tense is effectively by using songs.
A. CONCLUSION
Based on the result of the research in SMAN 2 Cenrana. It can be concluded that.
Teaching by songs can improve students’ in learning simple past tense. It shows that the
mean score obtained by the students in the post-test (68.75) was greater than the mean score of
the students’ in the pre-test (45). The students’ achievement of using songs a significant progress
is shown in the result after giving the treatment. The students can recognize the most important
ideas and information from songs lyric and completing a song lyric with simple past tense verb
to help their ability in learning simple past tense. By using this technique will help students focus
on simple past tense verb in their own words understand and remember. Result of the research
showed that the students improve their students’ ability in learning simple past tense effectively.
Songs in teaching learning English that it encourages their spirit to study and reduce boredom.
B. SUGGESTION
The researcher give some suggestion as follow:
In English language teaching and learning at senior high school,the researcher should
create enjoyable,fun and interesting situation as much as the teacher can. The enjoyment ought to
be the foremost aims which hopefully will have good effect on the education because they like it.
In other word, the teacher should make learning interesting because students like to learn when
they are enjoying themselves.
The researcher suggests the teacher uses this technique because it will make enjoyment in
teaching learning process. For the future research, the next researcher maybe uses the other text
because this text is more complicated and researcher hopes that this study could be reference for
future researcher that will analyze teaching simple past tense through songs.
Teaching English by using song should be recommended to all english teachers because
it can raise the students’ motivation to learn English in the classroom.
Finally, the writer realizes that this paper is far from being perfect hence constructive
critics and advice are really expected for the perfection of the thesis. Hopefully, this thesis will be useful for all of us.
