Integrating English and Islamic Learning Materials in Teaching-Speaking Classroom (A Study Case at the First Grade of Ma Al-Junaidiyah Biru, Bone)

Dichotomies over Islamic knowledge and general knowledge have resurfaced in these recent years. It also implicated in the educational system in Indonesia and madrasah or Islamic boarding school is no exception. Maimun Aqsha Lubis convinced that science integration is assumed as the answer to promote a ‘balanced’ human being. Along similar lines, the evidence diverges with the concept. A critical question arises when students have the lack understanding about Islamic terms in English while have a enthusiasm in general words which is far benefit for them as santri. This research addresses this gap by trying to integrated English and Islamic learning materials in teaching speaking in the first grade of MA Al-Junaidiyah Biru. It was drown on using qualitative method with homogenous sampling; selecting five participants with the same background to understand how they perform in the speaking class, what is their needs and how they perceive the materials. There was variation in use of classroom activities using integrated materials i.e debate was the most liked in the classroom activities while oral presentation was the least used. They also tend to be more convenient to make a dialog with their peers. The students more likely felt reluctant for being error or lack vocabularies in speaking yetstill feel encourage to participate in the class since the students realize that the materials are suit their need as Islamic students, santri. Further, the role of the teacher and stakeholders are needed to compile teaching set i.e. guideline, syllabus or lesson plans with integrated materials concept.rnConclusionsrnThe integrated English and Islamic learning materials can be categorized as a brand newchapter in education materials in MA Al-Junaidiyah Biru Bone. There is no such material before that combined two subjects especially in English teaching with Islamic subject.rnAccordingly, this research set out to analyze how the students’ performance in Teaching-Speaking classroom with integrated English and Islamic learning materials. Like the previous professional findings, this research shows that the performance of students in speaking activities still need effort to see some progressions. The researcher applied pair-work, debate and oral presentation for classroom speaking activities. The students gave different performance for these activities. The researcher analyzed that most of students gained good performance with integrated materials in debate session. Some factors encountered is that they still felt reluctant for being error or lack vocabularies though the teacher has stimulated them by using some brainstorming in the pre activities. rnThis research also found that the students were easily engaged in the speaking class using discussion or peer-work. Astonishingly, the students tend to be more convenient to make a discourse with their peers. The students gave excitement to learn such references regarding to their learning needs.The integrated materials also successfully encouraged them to participate in the class since the students realize that the materials are suit their need as Islamic students, santri. The students also perceived that they have so much joy learning with integrated materials since the relation between teacher and students are bound well. It is also responsibility for teacher to remain creative and innovative in teaching speaking with integrated materials for better education in the future. rnB. ImplicationsrnThe integration of English and Islamic learning materials is one of effort to encourage the successful of education in Indonesia particularly in MA Al-Junaidiyah Biru. The Islamic materials are incorporated in English materials i.e teaching-speaking classroom to omit the dichotomy between Islamic and modern science since both of them have a good purpose for the students. rnTo support the integrated English and Islamic learning materials, it is needed for stakeholders to prepare all teaching set such as the guideline silabus, lesson plans, some authentic books in the library, and teaching materials with integrated English and Islamic learning materials. Furthermore, English textbooks which were specially design for speaking activities in the classroom with Islamic content that can help the teacher and students to perform better in the classroom. Thus, the English learning particularly speaking and Islamic content can be gained comprehensively.rnrn
