Improving the students’ Descriptive Writing Skill through Showing not Telling Technique at the Third Semester of English Education program in STAIN Watampone

This thesis presents research about Improving the stdents’ Descriptive Writing
Skill throgh Showing not Telling Technique at the third Semester of English
Education program in STAIN Watampone. In writing a text, the students always find
the difficulties in improving their writing, organizing idea; and there is no motivation
of stdents to write. Showing Not Telling techniqe is one of technique which can help
the students to solve their difficulties in writig. The problem statements of this thesis
are: 1.) Does the use of Showing Not Telling technique improve the students’
descriptive writing skill of students in STAIN Watampone?. 2) Are the students of
STAIN Watampone interested in Showing Not Telling technique?. This research used
quantitative method. The sample consisted of 15 students of English Education at the
third semester of STAIN Watampone. The researcher gave pretest, treatments, and
posttest, while the data obtained through test were analyzed with mean score and the
formula of t-test. The result of the study shown that there was a significant
improvement of the students’ achievement after giving the treatment. It is provided in
the table in chapter IV. The mean score obtained by the students through pre-test was
60.73 and post-test was 71.46 the t-test value was higher than the t-table (to the t-
table (6.50 > 2.145) It means that H 0 is rejected and H 1 is acceptable. there were 14
students (93.33%) got high and 1 student (6.67%) got moderate category. None of the
students got very high, low and very low interst in learning writing descriptive
through showing not telling technique. From the data could be conclude that teaching
writing through showing not telling technique can improve students writing skill and
improve students’ interest in studying writing descriptive text.
A. Conclusion
Based on the result of the research on the previous chapter, the researcher
comes to conclusion. They are as follows:
1. Showing not telling technique gave the positive effect on students’ in writing
descriptive text. The students’ improve in studying writing descriptive after
doing treament. It is provided in the data that most of the students increased
after applying Showing Not Telling technique.
2. The students’ interest in studying writing through showing not telling technique
is high. The students are highly interest in studying writing through showing
not telling technique.
B. Suggestions
The researcher gives suggestions to all readers, as follows:
1. For the improvement of the teaching English, the researcher suggests to the
English teacher especially writing should apply the good technique in teaching
English writing based on thes students’ interest. One of the technique is using
showing not telling technique.
2. For the other researchers, if you want to make a research you should give
explanation more to the students’ because some of students’ are lack of
attention.
There are many techniques which can be used to increase students’ writing
ability and make the learning process more fun. Showing not telling technique is one
of the techniques which can be used or teachers can use another technique which is
appropriate with the subject which will be learned.
