Increasing Students’ Reading Ability by Using Printed Mass Media at the Eighth Grade Students of MTs Annurain Lonrae

This thesis presents research about Increasing Students’ Reading Ability
by Using Printed mass media at the Eighth Grade Students of MTs Annurain
Lonrae. The sample consisted of 40 students of the eighth grade students at MTs
Annurain Lonrae. This research used quantitative method and pre-experimental
design. The researchers gave pretest, treatment and posttest, where as data
obtained through test scores were analyzed by using mean score and t-test
formula. This research employed pre-experimental method with pretest and post-
test design. There were two variables they are independent variable (students’
reading ability) and dependent variable (printed mass media).
In conducting the study, the writer used quantitative method because the
writer conducted the data in form of numbers. And the way collected data by
using pre-experimental design with pre-test and post-test. This was used to
measure and interpret the data.
The result shows that there is a significant increasing in student
achievement after providing care. It is provided in the table in chapter IV. The
table indicates that the t-test is obtained by the students (7.85) greater than t-table
(2.035). The mean score of pre-test is 49.56 and post-test is 65. It means that H 0 is
rejected and H 1 accepted. Printed Mass Media is effective to increase the students’
reading ability.
A. Conclusion
Based on the result of analysis in the previous chapter, the researcher
concluded that using Printed Mass Media in teaching English Reading is effective
to increase students’ reading ability to the students of the eighth grade at MTs
Annurain Lonrae. It could be seen that the students’ prior knowledge of reading is
still low, it is provided in the data that most of the students mean score in pre-test
was 49.56 and it increased after using printed mass media. The students’ mean
score in post-test was 65 and the students’ achievement t-test was 7.85 and the
students’ achievement t-table was 2.035.
B. Suggestion
The researcher gives suggestions to all readers and especially for teacher
and students that for the improvement of the teaching English, the researcher
suggests to the English teacher especially reading should apply the good strategy
in reading to teach English reading based on te students’ motivation. Applying
printed mass media can help the students’ to understand the content of the text in
reading achievement.
