An Analysis of Teachers’ Pedagogic Competence in Teaching English in SMPN 1 Watampone

This research is about an analysis of teachers’ pedagogic competence in
teaching English in SMPN 1 Watampone. The objective of this research is going to
know about the teachers’ pedagogic competence in teaching English in SMPN 1
Watampone. In this research, the researcher uses qualitative research method with a
direct approach to know about the teachers’ pedagogic competence and what the
teachers do to achieve the pedagogic competence in the teaching-learning process.
The instrument that used in this research are observation, questionnaire, and
interview. Sources of the data in this research are all of the English teachers in SMPN
1 Watampone.
The result of this research shows that the teachers’ pedagogic competence in
teaching English in SMPN 1 Watampone is very good. It could be seen from the
result of the observation and questionnaire that have given to five (5) English teachers
as object of the research. The result of the teachers questionnaire shows that that the
average score of teachers’ pedagogic competence is 85,96% and it is the interval 76
% - 100% which means very good and to achieve a good pedagogic competence in
teaching English were by doing peer tutoring techniques, individual guidance to
students who considered not able to understand about the lesson and give attention to
all students , pay attention to the condition of the students, master of curriculum
development, communication with the students, master of assessment, and
evaluation.
A. Conclusion
Based on the descriptions that has been presented in the previous chapter,
it can be concluded that :
1. The teachers’ pedagogic competence in teaching English of English teacher
in SMPN 1 Watampone is very good. It could be seen from the results of the
observation and questionnaires that have been given to five (5) English
teachers as the object of research.The results of teacher questionnaires show
that the average score of teachers pedagogic competence is 85.96% and is at
the interval of 76% -100% which means very good.
2. The process which was done by the English teachers in SMPN 1 Watampone
to achieve a good pedagogic competence in teaching English were by doing
peer tutoring techniques, individual guidance to students who were
considered not able to understand the lesson and give attention to all students.
Attention in this case was the attention to the condition of the students,
attention to each question and rebuttal proposed by students on teaching and
learning process. It was done to resolve the students’ different characteristic.
In the other hand, a teacher has to make a interest condition on the teaching-
learning process. An effective way to get students to learn is by getting them
interested in their subjects first. When students were interested in the
subjects, then automatically students will be eager to receive the lesson. It is
an important indicator of teacher pedagogic competence that is developing
learning process which educated and encouraged student creativity in
learning. In addition, a good lesson is a learning that fits the curriculum. The
curriculum used in SMPN 1 Watampone is the curriculum of 2013 of skills-
based curriculum. Curriculum 2013 is a curriculum that uses student center
method. In the curriculum there are already indicators that are needed in
learning, but teachers were still guided to develop lesson plans, materials and
learning methods in accordance with the needs of students and curriculum as
a guide for teaching.
B. Suggestion
Without reducing respectfor all those who are component in educational
institutions, humble authors provide advice for the implementation of better for
SMPN 1 Watampone :
1. For schools, it is expected that the results of this study supervision of teachers
more improved. Student coaching is maximized. Because, without any intense
supervision does not close teacher performance possibilities will decrease.
Especially for faculty, the authors hope to further improve its quality well
personal, professional, and socially.
2. For teachers, it is expected that the results of this research can be input for
teachers, teachers can further improve their Competence, in particular
pedagogic competence. So that learning results will be more leverage.
3. For other researchers or the next who will conduct research
in this field, it is hoped that the result of this research can be an illustration,
information and inputs on teacher pedagogic competence areas.
