Lecturers’ Speech Acts in Teaching and Learning Process At STAIN Watampone

The researcher aim to find out, to identify, and to comprehend the lecturers‟
illocutionary and perlocutionary speech acts in teaching and learning process in at
STAIN Watampone.
This research to support the development of linguistics and this study will be
benefical for the other writers in organizing a research of speech acts. The lecturers
would obtain meaningful information of speech acts that are used in the teaching and
learning process. So, the students would comprehend the speech acts that are used by
their lecturers so that they would be more easily to adjust with the lecturer speech
acts and know how to observe the speech acts in speaking.
It was drawn on using qualitative method and describe holistically the types
of speech act by the lecturers using in teaching and learning process. The instrument
of the research was taken by observation and record teaching and learning process in
the class. So, it will be documented the result of observation in a transcript. In this
research, speech act is devide in 2 terms are illocutionary and perlocutionary act. In
teaching and learning process, the lecturers using illocutionary acts in the class about
19 types of illocutionary acts in the field and there are 15 types of perlocutionary acts
found.
A. Conclusions
The conclusions presented in this research are reached in order to answer
the research questions. Here are the conclusions of the findings about analysis of
lecturers‟ speech act in teaching and learning process :
a. The lecturers‟ illocutionary and perlocutionary acts
The classification of illocutionary acts of the lecturers use in the class are
representative, directive, expressive, commissive, and declaration. From the
lecturers‟ speech act in the class, the researcher found that there are about 19 types of
illocutionary acts that found in the field, such as „ordering‟, „commanding‟,
„pleasing‟, „asking‟, „suggesting‟, „advising‟, „stating‟, „complaining‟, „reporting‟,
„telling‟, „proud‟, „complying‟, „forgiving‟, „greeting‟, „promising‟, „threating‟,
„naming‟, „clarifying‟, and „kidding‟. The highest number of them that often appear
in lecturing process are the act of ordedring, commanding, and asking. Those three
acts are the acts that often used by the lecturers in the classes.
There are 16 kinds of perlocutionary acts are „get students to remember‟, „get
students to do something‟, „make students to give response‟, „attract attention‟, „get
students to obligate‟, „get students to answer‟, „emphatic‟, „get students to
understand‟, „get students to think‟, „make students agree‟, „shame‟, „convincing‟,
„impressing‟, „get student to feel respectable‟, „make students to forgive‟, and
„amusing‟.
B. Suggestion
In lecturing process in the class with the students, the lecturers will produce
some utterances to convey the materials through their speech. In this typical situation
of speech, will be supported by the lecturer as the speaker and the students as the
listenera that compose a population in the class which the lecturer will utterances the
acts are varied.
To support the students‟ attention, it is needes many formula to make the
class situation and students mood be good. So, the material will be interest by the
lecturers‟ speech act. Speech acts not only involving lecturers as a speaker, but
students as a hearer to accept the utteances from the lecturer. So, the lecturers should
giving attention about their utterances.
