The Expressions of English Slang Language in EFL Learners at STAIN Watampone

Slang is a part of spoken language and used by ordinary people and slang
was used in daily conversation because of simpler and easier to speak it. The purpose
of this research is to find out the expressions of English slang language used by
English Foreign Language (EFL) learners by observation technique. To achieve the
objectives of the research, the researcher observed the conversation of EFL learners
in direct or through social media. In analyzing the data, the researcher used a
descriptive qualitative to find the result. The result of the research finds some
expressions of English slang language based on the word formation process on
English slang language. Based on this result, it could be stated that the learners in
EFL learners context at STAIN Watampone used English slang language although
they do not understand the characterization of English slang such as otw, btw,
speechless, illfeel, wanna, etc. English slang used by a particular group and each has
a meaning that depends on the user. The learners used English slang language
because of it is an easy way to communicate.
A. Conclusions
Slang is words used by a particular social group and each has meaning that
the meaning depends on the user. However, the meaning of English slang language
used in EFL learners are varieties. Based on the data analysis on the previous chapter,
the researcher makes some conclusions of the characteristic of slang used in EFL
learners as the following:
1. Considering the problem statement about the expressions of English slang used
by EFL learners, the researcher find many words of slang based on the words
formation process. The majority of the characteristic of English slang used by
EFL learners is compounding such as badmood, speechless, illfeel, online,
ontime, deadline, come on, hurry up and abbreviation such as TV, DVD, FD, WA,
HP, NB, OTW, BTW, OMG, and WRU. The learners disposed used English slang
language in writing context, evidently most of slang found in their social media.
2. The characterizations of word formation processes of English slang language
have several types, such as: compounding, coinage, blending, clipping,
borrowing, abbreviation, and back formation.
3. The reasons of EFL learners used English slang just for fun and it was easy way
to communicate, to reduce a seriousness, to differentiate with another, and to
enrich the language although they do not understand about the characterization of
word formation process on English slang.
B. Suggestions
There are many English slang language can be analyzed by another
researcher, such as English slang that find in English song, novel, etc. The researcher
suggests other researchers to conduct other researches about this topic in the different
aspect such as to compare the usage between British and Aussie in using slang
language. The researcher hopes that this researcher gives benefit to the other
researcher especially to the English department learners to understand about English
slang and how the characterization of word formation process on English slang
language.
