Increasing Vocabulary Mastery Through Short Guided Dialogue In Teaching Engliush At SMAN 9 Bone

This research is aimed to find out the significance of Short Guided Dialogue
in increasing students’ vocabulary mastery at the ten grade of SMAN 9 Bone.The
objective of this research is: To increase students’ vocabulary mastery by using Short
Dialogue in Teaching English. This research used Quantitative method by using
experimental research in one group.
The population of this research is 201 students. The sample of this research is
the class IPS 4 of the ten grade student at SMAN 9 Bone which consists of 29
students. The researcher used cluster sampling. This research employs one
instruments based on the problem statements investigated, they are vocabulary test.
Vocabulary test consists of pre-test which is given to the students to know the
students’ vocabulary mastery before applying Short Guided Dialogue and post-test is
given to the students to know the students’ vocabulary mastery after applying Short
Guided Dialogue.
After several meetings, this research finds out the use of Short Guided
Dialogue effective to increase the students’ vocabulary mastery. The result of this
research shows that the mean score obtains by the students through pre-test is 38,63
and post-test is 55,90, and the t-test value is higher than the t-table (9,796 > 2,080). It
means that there is a significant difference between the result of the students’ pre-test
and post-test. Therefore, null hypothesis (H0) is rejected and alternative hypothesis
(H1) is accepted.
A. Conclusions
Students’ vocabulary master before applying Short Guided Dialogue is
still low, it is proved by the data that the most of students got very poor and poor
classification with mean score of students’ pre-test is 38.63. Students’ vocabulary
mastery after applying Short Guided Dialogue is significantly improve their
vocabulary, it is showed by mean score of students’ post-test is 55.90. The
application of Short Guided Dialogue is really helpful to improve the students’
vocabulary mastery because there is a significant vocabulary mastery of the
students after the treatments are conducted. It is proved by the result of data
analysis after being compared t-table with t-test. The t – test (9.796) is higher
that t – table (2,080).
B. Suggestions
In view of fact that the application of Short Guided Dialogue in teaching
vocabulary, has been proved to be more effective in increasing the students’
vocabulary mastery and interested in learning English vocabulary, the researcher
would like to give suggestions as follows :
1. The English teacher can apply short guided as one of the ways in teaching
vocabulary.
2. The students of the ten grade of SMAN 9 Bone can maintain their
vocabulary in learning English.
