The Effectiveness English Talking Book in Teaching Reading Comprehension at the Fourth Semester of IAIN Bone

This research presents about the effectiveness of English talking book
media in teaching reading comprehension at the fourth semester of IAIN Bone. This
research used quasi-experimental method. The sample conswerets of 34 students from
the second group of the fourth semester English Study Program of IAIN Bone. The
students were placed into two groups: experimental group and the control group
where each group consisted of 17 students. The data on the students’ reading
comprehension achievement was analyzed by using SPSS 23 and data on the
students’ motivation was analyzed by using Likert scale. The experimental group was
given the treatment by using English talking book media while the control group was
given treatment by using conventional media.
The results of the research were: (1) Using English talking book was more
effective than using conventional media in improving students’ reading
comprehension achievement at fourth semester students’ of English Study Program of
IAIN Bone. The comparison data between pre-test and post-test of experimental
group indicated that the mean score were improved where the mean score of the
experimental group in post-test was significantly higher than the control group (81.47
> 70.88). (2) Another result showed the student of experimental group was very
highly motivated if the teacher used English talking book media in teaching reading.
Based on the data it could be known that teaching reading comprehension
by using English talking book media could improve the students’ reading
comprehension achievement and students’ motivation in studying reading
comprehension of the fourth semester of English Study Program of IAIN Bone.
A. Conclusion
Based on the data analysis and the discussion in the previous chapter, the
researcher concludes that:
1. Using English talking book is proven to be more effective to improve students’
reading comprehension achievement of the fourth semester students of English
Study Program of STAIN Watampone. It can be seen from the comparison data
between the mean score of post test was significantly higher than pre test
(81.47 > 69.12)
2. The students’ motivation in studying reading comprehension by using English
talking book is categorized as highly motivated by the mean score 81.6
Students’ background knowledge on the topic of the materials can help them
understand easily while the good atmosphere in the class can help students
enjoy the learning process.
B. Suggestion
Based on the conclusion above, the researcher addresses the following
suggestion:
1. It is strongly suggested that using English talking book in teaching reading
comprehension be continually implemented in IAIN Bone in order to avoid
monotonous material.
2. For the improvement of the teaching English, the researcher suggest to the
English teacher especially reading should give the good method or media in
teaching English based on the students’ motivation.
