Students errors in using simple past tense in writing narative text ( the case study of the tenth year students of Madrasah Aliyah Ponre)

The purpose of this research is to know both the types of error and the most dominant error made by the students in using simple past tense in writing narrative text. The subjects of this research are 10 of first grade students of Madrasah Aliyah DDI Ponre. The writer used a descriptive qualitative method. To collect data the writer used writing test. The collected was identified, classified and analysed based on the types of error using Dulay’s theory. The results of this research showed that based on the surface strategy taxonomy, the students tanded to make errors in the form of omission (47 errors = 73.43%), in the form of addition (5 errors = 7.81%), in the form of misformation (10 errors = 15.62%) and the students tanded to make error in the form of misordering (2 errors = 3.12%) out of total errors (64 errors). The reasons why they made errors because of the student lacked English grammatical rules mastery and different language rules between Indonesian and English languages.
A.Conclusion
After analyzed the result of the data, the writer could conclude that: by the tenth year Madrasah Aliyah DDI Ponre could be categorized into 4 (four) types of surface strategy taxonomy errors. The percentage and frequency of errors resulted from the students narrative text writing based on Surface Strategy Taxonomy. They are :
1. Errors in omission is 73,43% ( 47 items from total errors)
2. Errors in addition is 7,81% ( 5 items from total errors)
3. Errors in misformation is 15,62% (10 items from total errors)
4. Errors in misordering is 3,12% (2 items from total errors).
B. Suggestions
The researcher gives suggestion to all readers and especially for teacher or lecturer that and students.
1.For Teachers
a.have to be able to motivate and support the students in writing class.
b.Teachers pay any attention in teaching their students about the rules, grammars, structures, patterns, and the correct form of verb II or tense especially simple past tense in writing narrative text. So the teachers should organize the material from the easiet to the most difficult items. They have to provide the students with more exercises and remedial items.
2.For Students
a.Students should pay more attention to study grammar while the teacher is explaining.
b.Students must memorize the rules of verb form and the patterns of simple past tense, do more exercises in using simple past tense and they are also expected to be able to identify their error and to avoid the error or mistake in the future.
c.Students have to study the material in their house before it will be explained by the teacher in the class.
