Increasing Students' Reading Comprehension By Using Skimming Technique At The Eight Of SMPN 4 Watampone

This research is aimed at finding out the significance using skimming technique in increasing students’ reading comprehension at the eighth grade students’of SMPN 4 Watampone.
The population of this research is at the eighth grade students’of SMPN 4 Watampone. The writer applied cluster sampling.This research employed one instruments based on the problem statements investigated, there is reading test . Reading test consists of pre-test is given to the students to know the students’ reading comprehension before using skimming technique and post-test is given to the students to know the students’ reading comprehension after using skimming technique.
After several meetings, this research finds out the use of using skimming technique sigificantly effective to increasing students’ reading comprehension. The result of this research shows : (1) the mean score obtained by the students through pre-test is 68,5 and post-test is 75,10, (2) the t-test value is higher than the t-table (14,14 > 2,048). It means that there is a significant difference between the result of the students’ pre-test and post-test. Therefore, null hypothesis (H0) is rejected and alternative hypothesis (H1) is accepted.
A. Conclusions
Based on the findings and discussion above, the researcher comes to conclusion. There is as follows :
Students’ reading comprehension before applying skimming technique was still low, it is proved by the data that the most of students got poor classification with mean score of students’ pre-test is 68,5. Students’ reading comprehension after applying skimming technique is significantly improved their reading comprehension, it is showed by the data that most of them got very good score with mean score of students’ post-test is 75,10. Students’ reading comprehension after applying skimming technique is significantly increased their reading, it is showed by the data that most of them get very good score. So, by using skimming technique significantly in increasing students’ reading comprehension at the eighth grade of SMPN 4 Watampone Academic Year 2015/2016.
B. Suggestions
In view of fact that the application of skimming technique in teaching reading as the teaching method, has been proved to be more effective in improving the students’ reading comprehension and motivate in learning English reading, the researcher would like to give suggestions as follows :
1. For teacher :
a. The teacher should give the material well and should give their good performance in the classroom. Besides, the teacher should pay attention to the students’ activity while teaching learning process.
b. The teacher should be creative to manage the material and the classroom for teaching reading such as applying skimming technique.
c. To improve the students’ comprehension and knowledge in reading, recommended for English teachers, especially to teach Junior High School students in order to attract their motivation in learning English to be more fun.
2. For student :
a. The students of the eighth grade SMPN 4 Watampone have to improve their reading comprehension as an important thing in learning a language.
b. The students of the eighth grade SMPN 4 Watampone trough to interested their self and manage their time.
