The Comparative Study of Students’ Listening Achievement Between Using Authentic Material and Teacher-Made Material at The Fifth Semester of English Study Program of STAIN Watampone
Indri Srikandi/02.12.4038 - Personal Name
The objectives of this research are: (1) To find out whether or not there is significant difference of students’ listening achievement between using authentic material and teacher-made material. (2) To find out students’ motivation between using authentic material and teacher-made material.
This research employed Quasi Experimental Design with two groups pretest and posttest design. The population and sample of this research was the fifth semester of English Study Program of STAIN Watampone. That consisted of 25 students each class. This research used cluster random sampling technique. Experimental group was taught by using authentic material and control group was taught by using teacher-made material. The research data were collected by using two kinds of instruments namely: listening test and questionnaire.
The results of the research are: (1) Authentic materials is more effective to improve students’ listening achievement at the fifth semester of English Study Program of STAIN Watampone. than the teacher-made. Based on the t-test of the students’ post-test of experimental group and control group, there was significant difference because t-test was greater than t-table (4.22 > 2.010). (2) The comparison data between the questionnaires of both groups indicates that the mean score of questionnaire in experimental group is higher than control group (87.12 > 66.12)
A. Conclusion
Based on the data analysis and the discussion in the previous chapter, the researcher concludes that:
1. Authentic material is more effective to improving students’ listening achievement of the fifth semester of English Study Program of STAIN Watampone than the teacher-made material. The comparison data between pre-test and post-test of experimental group (using authentic material) and control group (using teacher-made material) indicates that the mean score improve which is the mean score of the experimental group in post-test is higher than the control group (83.2 > 78.2). Based on the t-test of the students’ post-test of experimental group and control group, there is significant difference because t-test was greater than t-table (4.22 > 2.010).
2. The students’ motivation in the authentic material in listening class is categorized as very high. Meanwhile, students’ motivation in the teacher-made material is categorized as high. The comparison data between the questionnaires of both groups indicates that the mean score of questionnaire in experimental group is higher than control group (87.12 > 66.12).
B. Suggestion
Based on the conclusion above, the researcher addresses the following suggestion:
1. It is suggested that authentic material be continually implemented in listening class, it means to avoid monotonous material especially in teaching listening.
2. In using authentic materials, teacher should be make extra preparation starting from the selection of materials which should be suitable to the students and curriculum to be used in the class.
