The Students’ Difficulties to Write the Journal Abstract (A Case Study of EFL Students in STAIN Watampone)

Writing journal paper in English is now a requirement for many scientists in
developing countries. However, it places an additional burden on nonnative speaker.
Therefore, it needs empirical investigation to fulfill the question of international
scholarly publication on the part of EFL (English Foreign Language) writers. This
research focuses on students’ difficulties to write journal abstract in STAIN
Watampone.
Interview and document analysis were conducted emphasizing that linguistic-
stylistic aspects were most problematic areas than formal aspects of abstract, such us
summarizing, sentence order, finding new word, punctuation, etc.
In conclusion, lacking of English and common science comprehension are as
fundamentally problem of it. Suggestions for further research and pedagogical
implications are provided.
A. Conclusion
Mastery of English language has influence on writing of international journal
especially in abstract. Although there is lack in formality aspect of abstract, the
difficulties in writing abstract of EFL students in STAIN Watampone are in the
linguistic-stylistic aspects dominantly. Such us hard condition to identify the
representative or suitable word, understand new word, sentence summarization,
paragraph making, etc. On the other side, mastery in English is also influenced by
writing and reading journal activities. So it will be concluded that abstract writing and
English mastery have the strong relation which can increase students’ quality.
Therefore, this thing should include in learning-teaching activity in the classroom to
build the rich knowledge.
B. Suggestion
This research is a form of re-open of our eyes and mind to review a problem
which existed around us in education environment. Clearly, this research has to be a
consideration in our education order, then becomes a recommendation and suggestion
toward the members of education, such us stake holder or leader, lectures, students
specifically and even the other institution or communities which involved in
education world commonly.
