The Effectiveness of Board Races Game in Teaching Grammar at the Eighth Grade Students of Modern Islamic Junior Boarding School Al-Junaidiyah Biru Bone

This research aims at finding out the effectiveness of using board races game in improving students’ achievement and motivation in studying grammar at the eighth grade students of Modern Islamic Junior Boarding School Al-junaidiyah Biru Bone.rnThe method applied in writing this research was quantitative method. The design of the research was pre-experimental with one group pre-test and post-test. This research used two variables: (1) independent variable was using board races game in teaching grammar, (2) dependent variable was students’ achievement and motivation in studying grammar.rnThe population of this research were all of the eighth grade students of Modern Islamic Junior Boarding School Al-Junaidiyah Biru Bone academic year 2016/2017. The sum of population were 80 students which consisted of 5 classes. The writer applied cluster random sampling. The writer took only one class randomly as the sample of this research. Class VIII E was taken as the sample in this research which consisted of 18 students.rnThis research employed two different instruments based on the problem statements investigated, they were grammar test and questionnaire. Grammar test consisted of pre-test was given to the students to know the students’ grammar achievement before applying board races game and post-test was given to the students to know the students’ grammar achievement after applying board races game. And questionnaire was given to find out the students’ motivation in studying grammar by applying board races game.rnAfter several meetings, this research found out the use of board races game significantly effective to improve the students’ grammar achievement. The result of this research shows: (1) the mean score obtained by the students through pre-test was 41.389 and post-test was 83.611 (2) the t-test value was higher than the t-table (15.534 > 2.110). It means that there was a significant difference between the result of the students’ pre-test and post-test. Therefore, null hypothesis (H0) was rejected and alternative hypothesis (H1) was accepted.rnA.ConclusionsrnBased on the result of analysis in the previous chapter, the researcher concluded that:rn1.The use of board races game was effective in improving students’ achievement in grammar. It was proved by the data of students’ score in pre-test and post-test before and after applying board races game. The table of both score shows that students’ mean score in the post-test (83.611) was higher than the mean score of the students in pre-test (41.389). The students’ grammar achievement improved after doing some treatments by using board races game. So, it is concluded that the use of board races game was effective to improve students’ grammar achievement to the students of the eighth grade students of Modern Islamic Junior Boarding School Al-Junaidiyah Biru Bone.rn2.By using board races game, the students were motivated in studying grammar. It was showed by the table that most of the students got high mean score in questionnaire (82.555).rnB.SuggestionsrnIn view of fact that the use of board races game in teaching grammar as a media of teaching, has been proved being more effective in improving students’ grammar achievement and motivation in learning English grammar. The researcher would like to give suggestion as follows:rn1.The teacher should be creative to manage the material and the classroom for teaching English grammar such us using various media like board races game.rn2.The teacher should apply board races game as one of the interesting medias in teaching grammar to improve students’ achievement and motivation in grammar.rn
