Improving The Students’ Writing Ability through Estafet Writing at the third grade students 0f MAN 2 Watampone

This thesis aims at finding out the improvement of Estafet Writing method to the students’ ability in writing narrative test of the Third Grade Students in MAN 2 Watampone. The problem statement of the research is “Does the students’ writing ability improve by using the Estafet Writing at the third grade students of MAN 2 Watampone?”
The method is used in this research is quantitative. This population of this research is 117 students from class IPA 1, IPA 2, IPA 3, IPS 1, IPS 2 and BAHASA. The researcher uses purposive sampling technique and take class IPA 2 as the sample which consist of 18 students. The writing test is given in both pre-test and post-test. The test is used to find out the data about the students’ ability in writing. The students’ writng ability is calculated based on five components: grammar, vocabulary, mechanic, content, and organization.
The descriptive analysis show that the students’ writing ability improve after receiving teatment by Estafet Writing method, it is supported by the inferential with the t-test (8,97) which is greater than the t-table value (2.110). The mean score the students in the post test (73.55) is greater than the mean score of the students in pre test (57.67). This is an evidence that Estafet Writing method can improve the students’ ability in writing narrative test of the Third Grade Students in MAN 2 Watampone.
A. Background
Writing is one of the skill between four skills in language which be used to communicate each other, as means of ideas and emotional expression on the paper. It is very important in our language. The most contex of life such as in the school, workplace and community always need writing skill. It shows that how important it is. Writing involves five general components which have to be focused, they are content, form, grammar, style and mechanics1.
With five general components above, some students feel that writing is difficult. Truly, the teacher sometimes asks the students to write or gives the students an assignment such as writing about an embarrassing story, remembering of the past time, story of culture and dreaming or willing in the future. But sometimes with the topic, the students feel difficult to arrange a paragraph and finish their story. They are bored, shy and afraid to write. It is caused by many reasons such as they do not know what should they write, they always attent about form, grammar, style and mechanics therefore it makes them thinking that writing is difficult and they are afraid to write.

Based on the paragraph above, the writer thinks that the students will be easier to write or arrange the paragraph if there is a method in learning process. There are many methods such using Mind Mapping, Peer Editing, Picture Series and Estafet Writing to Improve Students’ Writing ability. These methods are good but in this research, the researcher chooses Estafet Writing as her method. Estafet Writing is an innovative learning model in which one student starts writing a short story which is continued by another student and continued again one after another. By taking turns, the students write down imaginative sentence in their practice book (at least one sentence), then estafetely all students continue to write down their imaginative article so that it becomes a short story (the practice book goes around the students until it finallyreturns to its owner).2 There are many advantages of this method such us the students will feel the fun and happy situation. They will feel enthusiasm to write because they think about the time. It will be out therefore they will write what they think without taking a long time. They also will enthusiasm to read because they will feel anxious what the result of the story in their own book. With this method, the researcher hopes that the students will not be bored, doubt, afraid or shy again to write and arrange the paragraph because the situation is relaxer than writing without using this method. They just writing one paragraph on their own book and it will be continued by the right side friend of their respective. Finally, their own book will be back to themselves with one story which make theme anxious to read their story again.

Based on the explanation above the researcher is interested to carry out the research about writing entitled “Improving the Students’ Writing Ability through Estafet Writing at the third grade students of MAN 2 Watampone”.
B. Problem Statement
Having explained the problems of this research in the previous section, in this section the researcher formulates research question is addressed: Does the students’ writing ability improve by using the Estafet Writing at the third grade students of MAN 2 Watampone?
C. Objective of the Research
Based on the problem statement, the objectives of the research is formulated to find out the improvement of the students’ writing ability by using Estafet Writing at the third grade students of MAN 2 Watampone.
D. Significance of the Research
The findings of this study will give valuable information not only to the language teachers but also many others parties.
1. For the teachers, knowing method that influence the students’ writing ability to understand the learning process better. And also it can help the teachers to plan on how to encourage the students which have problems in writing.
2. For the students, it may motivate the students to improve their interest English since they will find out that writing is not always difficult to be learnt.
3. For the writer, it can give new knowledge and experience in teaching writing by using Estafet Writing.
4. For the readers, they will get many information and experience from this research.
E. The Definition of Term
In this thesis, the researcher gives some explanations of some key terms that predominantly appear in this proposal. These key terms explanation’s function is to make the readers to understand exactly about the meaning.
Improve is become or make something better to achieve or produce something of a better standard or quality the something else.3 Writing is handwriting, written work or form, the activity of writing especially book.4 Estafet Writing is an innovative learning model in which one student starts writing a short story which is continued by another student and continued again one after another.5

With the Estafet Writing method, it can be known that the students’ writing ability can improve and become better. The Estafet Writing method also can make the students feel fun and relax.
F. Scope of the Research
In this term, the researcher would like to improve the students’ writing ability by using Estafet Writing. The kind of the text is narrative paragraph especially for making a short story at the third grade students of MAN 2 Watampone in academic year of 2015/2016.
