The Use of seating Arrangement toward Students’ Active Participation in Speaking (A Study Case at IAIN Bone)

Teachers faced multiple forms of misbehavior in the classroom on a regular basis
i.e. student attention and available instructional time particularly in speaking
class. One strategy for helping prevent problem behavior was applying seating
arrangement. It fixed with purpose of the research which to identify student active
participation after applying seating arrangement. The Study employed
phenomenological research design in the quantitative method. The participants
were from two groups, experimental group and control group, who were selected
randomly through six groups population in forth semester at IAIN Bone. The
groups that investigated three common arrangements (i.e., rows, clusters, and
semi-circulars) were considered. The data were collected through observation
notes during class session and analyzed through content analysis. The result
indicated that teacher should be aware of differential impact of applying seating
arrangement in the speaking classroom. Students disposed passive at learning in
control group while in experimental group they showed difference style in
perceive teaching material.
A. Conclusions
Classroom management is the orchestration of classroom life: planning
curriculum, organizing procedures and resources, arranging the environment to
maximize efficiency, monitoring student progress, anticipating potential problem. It
also involve seating arrangements: row arrangement, cluster arrangement and Semi-
circular arrangement
Row arrangement is the formally arranged classroom with chairs and desks
facing forward and students sitting neatly in rows staring at the head of the individual
in front who is a familiar schoolroom arrangement.
Cluster seating is when the educator places the students either in groups or
pairs. This concept is very simple as the students usually work as a group to do some
work or assignment with the belief that the contribution of many allows a more
complete product, since each can contribute something the others don’t know
Semi-circle seating arrangement is when all the desks touch each other
facing the front of the room in a semi-circle shape. The teacher can easily see each
student and they can see him/ her and the instructional aids
Participation between lecturers and students is integral in the process of
learning. Participation are included Frequency of participation in class, quality of
comments and listening skill
The result of this research is both of the classrooms experimental and
control, they are in the same frequency to take apart as sample it is proofed by t-test.
Both experimental and control increase in posttest, but in t-test independent sample it
shows clearly that in experimental class there is significant effect of the use of seating

education in the classroom particularly in IAIN Bone. Variety of seating
arrangements can be applied by the lecturer in teaching speaking skill (i.e row
arrangement, cluster arrangement, and semi-circle arrangement). Based on the
researcher’s research it can support students to perform actively in the classroom.
